Anne Hathaway Reveals Why She Gave Her ‘Valentine’s Day’ Character a Southern Drawl

The Southern accent that Anne Hathaway’s character in the 2010 movie ‘Valentine’s Day’ adopted was purely her own invention, she disclosed.
Hathaway, 42, shared her thoughts on the romantic comedy’s 15th anniversary. She uploaded a ‘Valentine’s Day’ clip and thanked the late director Garry Marshall for working on three of her projects. She humorously noted in the post that she chose to give her character, Katya, a Southern drawl for some reason.
Hathaway portrays Liz in the movie, as a receptionist who, under the alias Katya, works covertly as a phone s*x operator. Her character starts dating Topher Grace’s character, Jason, who works as the mailroom clerk in the office.
In the video she shared, Liz is seen riding a scooter when a client calls. She puts on her s*xy phone persona and drops her helmet as she responds, informing the caller that she has been thinking about him all night. She jokes that she was unable to respond right away since she was pressed for time. She calls the client “sugar” and offers a romantic ‘Valentine’s Day’ surprise while she flirtatiously teases him—until a passing woman overhears the exchange and adds a hilarious remark.

‘Valentine’s Day’, which was directed by Garry Marshall, featured an ensemble cast that included Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, and Julia Roberts. On ‘Valentine’s Day’, the movie followed several couples as they navigated relationships and love.
Hathaway, who also starred in ‘The Princess Diaries’ movies, had a long-standing working relationship with Marshall. She remembers how much his mentoring influenced her and has given him credit for starting her career. She acknowledged in a 2020 interview that she had no idea what she was doing when she was cast in ‘The Princess Diaries’ at the age of 18, but Marshall helped mould her performance and, consequently, brought her to the public’s attention.
