‘Back to the Future 4’ is Not Happening, Confirms Writer Bob Gale

‘Back to the Future’ author Bob Gale has once again dashed expectations for a fourth entry in the cherished series.

Gale was questioned about the prospect of a follow-up adventure with Marty McFly and Doc Brown during a press conference at the Saturn Awards recently, where he accepted an award for the film’s 40th anniversary. He gave a direct reaction, stating that when fans inquire about ‘Back to the Future 4’, he always responds with a stern rejection.

Released between 1985 and 1990, the original ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy is still regarded as a classic in popular culture. Since the third chapter, no new films have been produced, even though the story has continued in several media, including stage musicals, computer games, and animated shows.

The final say on whether a sequel or remake can occur rests with Gale and director Robert Zemeckis, who have been steadfastly opposed to the idea for decades. Gale acknowledged that studios frequently approach them about producing a fourth movie, offering financial incentives, in a 2020 interview with BBC News. He and Zemeckis have consistently declined, though, claiming that they have already made a lot of money and that it would be a betrayal to return to the series.

He noted that the trilogy had a clear conclusion and likened the concept to selling one’s children into exploitation. The health of Michael J. Fox is another important factor contributing to their resistance. According to Gale, fans would not want to see another actor play Marty McFly in a direct continuation, and Fox, who has been fighting Parkinson’s disease for decades, is not in good health to reprise the role.

Zemeckis has expressed similar opinions. He made it clear in a September interview with FandomWire that a new movie wouldn’t be made until after he and Gale were gone. He called the concept of a remake needless and ridiculous, comparing it to remaking ‘Citizen Kane’.

Fans are still very interested in a contemporary ‘Back to the Future’ movie, despite their strong opinions. In 2023, a widely shared fan-made film fueled conjecture by reimagining the scenario with ‘Spider-Man’ star Tom Holland as Marty McFly’s kid. But ‘Back to the Future 4’ will never happen as long as Gale and Zemeckis are involved.
