Bill Murray Hilariously Ranks ‘Weekend Update’ Anchors From ‘Worst to Best’ During SNL50 Special

Former hosts Bill Murray and Seth Meyers graced the legendary ‘Weekend Update’ segment during the ‘SNL50: The Anniversary Special’. In light of Black History Month, Murray used the occasion to provide his personal ranking of previous anchors, beginning with Michael Che as the top African American anchor.

Murray jokingly ranked the other anchors from “worst to best.” With a nod to Colin Quinn, he mockingly mocked Colin Jost and made a joke about being disqualified for using performance-enhancing drugs while on the show. The rankings went on to include celebrities like Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Dennis Miller, and Kevin Nealon. After praising Chevy Chase and Jane Curtin, he humorously said that Jost’s friendship with actress Scarlett Johansson was the reason he had earned the top slot. However, he later revealed that Jost’s spot was actually for his brother, Brian Doyle-Murray.

Michael Che and Colin Jost began the segment by making jokes about how long the show has been around. Jost made reference to SNL’s possible last season, while Che pointed out that they are the show’s longest-serving anchors. They acknowledged the show’s big award haul in a hilarious way. Her “girl you wish you hadn’t started a conversation with at a party” persona, played by Cecily Strong, revealed an unplanned pregnancy.

Following Bobby Moynihan’s performance as Drunk Uncle, Seth Meyers took over to honour Lorne Michaels by doing interviews with his childhood pals, Vanessa Bayer and Fred Armisen, which resulted in humorous gossip sessions.

Featuring iconic comedians and offering incisive, sardonic comedy about current events, ‘Weekend Update’ has been a mainstay of ‘Saturday Night Live’ since its premiere in 1975 and remains one of the show’s most cherished segments.
