Billie Eilish Reflects on Body Image Struggles and Past Obsession With Brandy Melville

Billie Eilish has revealed how her connection with her body image was greatly impacted by a well-known apparel company when she was a child. The 22-year-old singer recently talked about how her childhood love with Brandy Melville's one-size-fits-all attire influenced her concerns in an interview with Complex.

Eilish revealed that she embraced a feminine style as a young child and adored dressing up in fairy costumes and skirts. But when she was eleven years old, Brandy Melville captured her attention. Her initial issues with body image were sparked by the brand's limited sizing, which made her feel excluded because the items didn't fit her. Her early physical development and participation in dance coincided with this, exposing her to a culture that frequently exacerbated body-related worries.

Eilish's preference for loose-fitting apparel became a defining characteristic of her style as her career took off. Although it provided her with solace and a means of hiding her body, it also resulted in prejudice and public scrutiny. By the time she was sixteen, she felt constrained by the perception that she was undesirable androgynous. She made a daring move during the ‘Happier Than Ever’ phase to defy these assumptions by adopting a hyper-feminine look that included gowns, lingerie, and blonde hair to demonstrate her independence and adaptability.

Eilish acknowledged that she purposefully made this drastic change to demonstrate her ability to appreciate both extremes of the fashion spectrum while staying loyal to herself. She acknowledged her appreciation for the time of self-expression, even though she has now gone back to her former look.

As noted in the new documentary ‘Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion’, her remarks are part of a larger critique of Brandy Melville and its effects on body image. The singer also talked about how, despite her increasing self-acceptance, she is still impacted by public criticism of her appearance and sense of style. As she thought back on the constant criticism, she admitted that even though she's come to respect her own views more than those of others, the negativity still has a significant effect on her.
