Billie Eilish Reveals ‘Birds of a Feather’ Was First Created in the Back of an SUV

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas have a knack for finding creativity in unexpected places. During her appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, the Grammy-winning artist shared a rare clip of the siblings working on music in the back of an SUV in Brazil. Eilish explained that the video was taken about a year and a half ago, on their way to a show. For the duo, this kind of spontaneous work environment is typical. “It’s fun because it’s so casual and normal,” Eilish said, describing how they often find themselves working in random locations, with Finneas’ laptop serving as their mobile studio.

The clip shows them working on an older version of the song ‘Birds of a Feather,’ which eventually made it onto her latest album, ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’.

Eilish can be heard singing along and giving Finneas feedback until his laptop battery dies, cutting their session short. Reflecting on the process, Eilish admitted that the song went through many iterations before it felt right. “It’s such an old version of the song that I don’t even really remember, and it sounds so different now,” she said, marvelling at how much the track had evolved.

When Kimmel asked if she ever preferred earlier versions of songs over the final releases, Eilish candidly responded that those versions are usually “horribly terrible.”

Eilish also touched on the challenges she and Finneas faced while creating the album. They experienced a “big fight” over the direction and subject matter of the songs, with Finneas expressing frustration that Eilish wasn’t opening up about her feelings during the songwriting process.

This tension was particularly difficult for Eilish, who had just started to enjoy making music after struggling with it for years. Despite these challenges, they managed to complete the album, which was released on 17th May.
