BTS Breaks Destiny’s Child’s Record at The Billboard Music Awards

At the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on 15th May, BTS smashed a record previously held by Destiny’s Child. The annual awards show is currently taking place inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena, but the world-record-breaking band is not in attendance.

BTS received the prizes for Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist and Top Selling Song for their song “Butter” earlier on 15th May. With these new victories, they now have a total of 12 BBMA trophies, making them the most successful group in the event’s history.

The previous record of Destiny’s Child was 11 wins, which stood unbeaten for 17 years. BTS has now tied One Direction for the most Top Duo/Group victories. Following wins in 2021 and 2019, this is the third time the Korean group has won the accolade.

The majority of the prizes at the Billboard Music Awards 2022 were given out through TikTok broadcast, leaving only eight to be given out during tonight’s programme. Olivia Rodrigo and Kanye West led the winners with six trophies each going into the evening.

The Weeknd received the most BBMAs 2022 nominations (17), followed by Doja Cat with 14. She took home the trophy for Top R&B Artist as the first award of the main presentation.

Silk Sonic performed an early set at the ceremony, covering Con Funk Shun’s “Love’s Train.” Other artists performing tonight include Machine Gun Kelly, Florence + The Machine, Ed Sheeran, Burna Boy and others. Morgan Wallen will return to the ceremony after being barred from it last year after video of him using a racial slur went viral.
