Cameron Crowe has provided a thrilling update on his upcoming Joni Mitchell biopic. Last year, Crowe, known for directing Almost Famous, announced that he would be leading a biopic about Joni Mitchell’s life and career. Although the film did not have a release date at that time, it has been in development for several years, with Crowe and Mitchell collaborating on the project for at least two years. In a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Crowe revealed that he anticipates the film will be released by Christmas 2025.
While he didn’t provide details about the film’s cast or which specific periods of Joni Mitchell’s life the movie will cover, Crowe compared the biopic to the 1983 Tom Petty documentary Heartbreakers Beach Party.

He described the upcoming biopic as “Joni’s life, not seen through anyone else’s lens, but through her own.” He emphasized that it will feature the characters who have influenced her life, including many who are well-known and some who are not, adding that the music is incredibly cinematic.
The director also mentioned that he and his team have conducted extensive research on Joni Mitchell’s life in preparation for filming.
He discovered that many people from her early life are still alive. They’ve spoken with them about what it was like to know Joni back then compared to now. Apparently, she’s still that same girl from Saskatoon. She possesses a lot of will and determination. It’s a life filled with a story worth telling, enriched with great music.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Meryl Streep, a close friend of Joni Mitchell, has been in discussions to play an older version of the singer-songwriter in the upcoming biopic. However, neither Crowe, Streep, nor Mitchell has confirmed the casting. Streep was recently spotted at Mitchell’s Joni Jam concerts in Los Angeles over the weekend. During the performances, the singer-songwriter unveiled several rare songs that had not been played live in decades, including Be Cool, Hejira, Cherokee Louise (first performance since 1995), Coyote (first since 2001), God Must Be a Boogie Man (first since 1983), Sunny Sunday (first since 1995), and more.
Additionally, she hosted a secret star-studded jam session backstage featuring Elton John, Chappell Roan, Brandi Carlile, Lucy Dacus, and others.
