Carrie Preston Swore Off Crab and Lobster After Iconic ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Scene

Not every movie magic is as gorgeous as it first appears.

Carrie Preston recently discussed one of her early performances in the 1997 romantic comedy ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ on The Kelly Clarkson Show. She recalled the movie’s time period, which she described as a “golden age” for romantic comedies.

In the film, Cameron Diaz’s character Kimmy, who was engaged to Dermot Mulroney’s character Michael, had twin bridesmaids in the form of Preston and Rachel Griffiths. In the meantime, Julianne, played by Julia Roberts, was covertly attempting to ruin the wedding in order to gain Michael for herself.

Julianne’s friend George (Rupert Everett) leads the entire bridal party in a rendition of ‘I Say a Little Prayer’ to make Michael envious in one of the movie’s most famous scenes, which takes place in a seafood restaurant. Although fans adore the sequence, it was not glamorous to film.

According to Preston, the scene took two full 12-hour days to shoot, and because it was located in a lobster house and crab shack, the overpowering seafood odour became intolerable. Her taste for crab and lobster had completely vanished by the end of filming, a fact that still holds true today.

Preston achieved success after ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, first as Elsbeth Tascioni on ‘The Good Wife’ and then as the lead in ‘True Blood’. She currently plays a quirky investigator who solves crimes in New York in CBS’s ‘Elsbeth’.

Actor Michael Emerson, who starred in ‘Lost’, is Preston’s spouse. Because of their jobs, the pair frequently spend time apart, but they attribute this to their growing relationship. Emerson is anticipated to return for several episodes after making a recent cameo on ‘Elsbeth’.

‘Elsbeth’ is still available to stream on Paramount+ and watch on CBS.
