Channing Tatum’s Gambit Era Ends—Why Taylor Kitsch Deserves a Second Chance

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ marks the debut of Wade Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and features at least one version of Hugh Jackman’s Logan. Before the film’s release, there were numerous rumours about potential cameos from previous Marvel movies, including Gambit, a mutant character first seen in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. Despite the film’s flaws, Gambit made a lasting impression on fans.

In ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, Channing Tatum steps into the role of Gambit, a part he has long desired. The project had struggled to materialize before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019. Though it seemed like Tatum’s chance had passed, the new film features him in a humorous nod to his long-anticipated role.

Tatum’s Gambit appears in the Void, alongside characters from Fox’s X-Men franchise, such as Jennifer Garner’s Elektra and Wesley Snipes’ Blade. Tatum’s portrayal, complete with Gambit’s iconic trench coat and purple armour, adds an exciting twist to the film’s meta humour, reflecting the character’s troubled development history.

Tatum’s dedication to Gambit is evident, as he has spent years trying to bring the character to the screen. His performance in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ includes impressive combat scenes and self-aware humour that adds depth to his portrayal. While Tatum’s Gambit is a standout, Taylor Kitsch’s earlier performance as Gambit in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ should not be forgotten.

Kitsch’s Gambit was limited by the film’s issues but still managed to capture the character’s essence. Despite the film’s shortcomings, Kitsch’s portrayal demonstrated his talent and deserves recognition.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ pays tribute to the era of Fox’s Marvel projects, highlighting their contributions to superhero cinema. Although Tatum’s Gambit makes a strong impression, Kitsch’s version should also be honoured, reflecting the film’s broader appreciation for past Marvel adaptations.
