Charli XCX Joins Forces With Takashi Miike for Upcoming Film Project

Charli XCX has added another major film to her growing list of screen credits—this time teaming up with acclaimed Japanese horror director Takashi Miike. The pop star is set to star in Miike’s next film and will also serve as a producer on the project. While further details remain under wraps, the screenplay is being written by Ross Evans, who previously wrote ‘How To Save A Marriage’ starring Robert Pattinson.
Takashi Miike is widely known for his prolific and genre-spanning work, most notably in horror and action. His best-known films include the unsettling Audition (1999), the ultra-violent Ichi the Killer (2001), as well as cult favourites like Crows Zero, Family, Dead or Alive, and Rainy Dog. With over 100 directing credits to his name, Miike’s unique and often provocative storytelling has earned him a legendary status in global cinema.
This untitled project adds to an already packed slate of acting ventures for Charli XCX. Just last month, Prime Video released a clip from the upcoming comedy series Overcompensating, in which Charli plays a heightened version of herself. In the preview, she furiously scolds an assistant for suggesting she perform her hit Boom Clap at a college event—delivering the line with exaggerated disbelief. Alongside her on-screen appearance, she also holds the role of executive music producer for the series.
Charli’s acting calendar has been rapidly filling up. In December 2024, it was confirmed that she had joined the cast of The Gallerist, acting opposite stars like Jenna Ortega, Natalie Portman, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, Daniel Brühl, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. She’s also signed on for I Want Your S*x directed by Gregg Araki, Sacrifice with Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans, and a film adaptation of 100 Nights of Hero, led by Emma Corrin and Maika Monroe.
In addition to these, she filmed a project titled Erupcja in Warsaw during the height of what fans dubbed the ‘Brat’ summer. She is also leading The Moment, an A24 mockumentary based on an original concept she developed herself. That film is currently in production in London.
Charli recently appeared to signal the end of the ‘Brat’ era during her Coachella set earlier this month, where a screen behind her displayed the message: “maybe it’s time for a different kind of summer?”—suggesting a passing of the cultural baton to other artists and filmmakers. However, she later admitted that she was uncertain about truly ending the era. Reflecting on her deep connection to the project, she explained that it had become so integral to her identity that she was finding it hard to let go. She expressed a desire for the ‘Brat’ era to continue, revealing that the idea of moving on was more complicated than she initially thought.
With major film roles, production credits, and her own ideas coming to life on screen, Charli XCX is showing no signs of slowing down—whether the ‘Brat’ era continues or not.
