Charli XCX Surprised by ‘Kamala is Brat’ Post Going Viral: “My Music Isn’t Political”
Charli XCX didn’t anticipate the wild response to her Brat-related political post on social media. In a cover story interview, the pop star clarified that her “music is not political” despite her viral post stating, ‘Kamala IS Brat’.
Charli explained that the reference was intended as “something positive and light-hearted” rather than an endorsement of a political candidate.

However, she also expressed her strong beliefs about democracy and women’s rights, stating, “To be on the right side of democracy, the right side of women’s rights, is hugely important to me. I’m happy to help prevent democracy from failing forever.”
While she acknowledged that she “obviously knew what I was doing” with the viral “Kamala is Brat” post, Charli admitted she didn’t expect it to gain as much attention as it did. She jokingly remarked, “Did I think I was talking about being a messy bitch and, like, partying and needing a Bic lighter and a pack of Marlboro Lights would end up on CNN? No.”

The post came shortly after President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. In a playful nod to her latest album, Charli XCX wrote on X, “Kamala [sic] IS Brat.”
Following her post, Harris’ official campaign account on X updated its banner to match the neon green style of Charli’s ‘Brat’ album, further fueling the social media buzz.
