Charlie Puth Embraces Self-Deprecation in New Roku Show

Charlie Puth is set to entertain fans with his new mockumentary, ‘The Charlie Puth Show’, launching on The Roku Channel. The series features a fictionalised version of the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter as he strives to elevate his profile and become a multi-hyphenate artist.

With six episodes of zany, low-stakes fun, Puth explores outlandish ideas, including reuniting One Direction and getting “Weird Al” Yankovic to spoof his songs. In an interview, Puth explained his creative approach: “I wanted the show to be like that because I’m not really an actor, and if I read lines, it’s going to sound rigid, so we just have to flow.”

The result is a series that relies heavily on improvisation, with Puth estimating that around “95% [of the dialogue] is improvisation.” This unique style allowed him to step outside his comfort zone and engage in an enjoyable experience.

The mockumentary features an impressive lineup of guest stars, including Will Ferrell, John Legend, John Mayer, and Rosie O’Donnell, with each episode featuring a song. Puth's real-life best friend also makes an appearance, adding to the authenticity of the show. Much of the wardrobe comes from Puth’s personal closet, making the character feel even more relatable.

The idea for the series emerged during the pandemic when live performances were on hold for many artists. Puth began jotting down ideas with the help of friends from Scout Productions, leading to a simple premise: be himself. He reflects on this by saying, “I’d say it’s 99% me. I don’t know if I’m that audibly loud and quirky every day. Some days I’m just like a boring stick figure.”

The show is peppered with witty pop culture references, ensuring that no one is off-limits for some good-natured ribbing, including Puth himself. Viewers can expect an entertaining blend of music, humour, and insight into the artist's personality, making ‘The Charlie Puth Show’ a must-watch.
