Check Out Gala’s Re-Recorded Version of the ’90s Dance Anthem ‘Freed From Desire’

Gala has re-recorded her 1996 dance anthem ‘Freed From Desire’.

The Italian artist originally released the track as the lead single from her 1997 debut album, Come Into My Life. It garnered both critical and commercial acclaim, achieving triple-platinum certification in the UK. In recent years, ‘Freed From Desire’ has gained new popularity as a football anthem, with fans worldwide changing the lyrics to celebrate their favourite players. The song will also be featured in the 2025 FIFA World Cup and was included in both the opening and closing ceremonies of this year’s Olympics in Paris. Now, 28 years after its initial release, Gala has shared an updated version to “reclaim” her rights to the song. She has also released a remix by Diplo, available now through Ministry Of Sound and B1 Recordings.

However, despite its lasting popularity, Gala has been unable to receive royalties over the years due to contractual issues related to the original track.

In a statement, Gala expressed that ‘Freed From Desire’ is a song that represents a ‘fight the power’ message and embodies her spirit. She mentioned that she wrote it inspired by a Buddhist concept that critiques the ongoing desire for more and encourages individuals to prioritize their principles and freedom. Gala shared that she had a strong intuition that ‘Freed From Desire’ would resonate with people.

Over the years, she dedicated herself to keeping the song alive and relevant. She remarked that she loves how the song’s resurgence was fuelled not by commercial interests, but by people singing it at sports events, student protests, and DJs playing it worldwide.

Gala stated that this re-release is about more than just reclaiming her rights; it’s also about revitalizing the song’s spirit for a new generation. She feels a stronger connection to the song’s core philosophy now than ever, especially in a world where younger generations are questioning the pursuit of material desires.

She also indicated that more remixes of the track are anticipated to be released soon.
