Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey’ Becomes First Film Shot Entirely with IMAX Cameras

With his most recent film, ‘The Odyssey’, Christopher Nolan is once again pushing the envelope in the film industry.  An IMAX spokesman revealed that the celebrated director’s film will become the first feature-length film to be shot exclusively with IMAX cameras.

The news was revealed at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival at IMAX's yearly press conference.  Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, revealed that after ‘Oppenheimer's popularity and 2023 Best Picture win, Christopher Nolan pushed the studio to develop its filmmaking technology.  IMAX created a new generation of film cameras that will now be utilised exclusively for this epic adaptation, motivated by Christopher Nolan's quest for technological breakthroughs, notably for lighter, quieter, and more efficient cameras.

‘The Odyssey’, which is now in production, is the first full-length movie slated to use these next-generation IMAX cameras.  In December 2024, it was originally stated that Christopher Nolan would be working with Universal Pictures on the film, bringing his vision of immersive large-format storytelling to the adaptation of Homer's epic tale.

The movie recounts the epic tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who must travel ten years to return home after the Trojan War.  With Christopher Nolan in charge, viewers can anticipate a version of this mythological epic that is both aesthetically spectacular and emotionally stirring.

Matt Damon leads the group and portrays Odysseus, one of the most recognizable figures in ancient literature.   He is joined by a star-studded ensemble that includes Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson.   Fans were given an early look at Damon's upcoming outfit in February, which featured armor, a flowing cloak, and a weary face.

Locations throughout Italy have been used for filming; in March, Damon, Holland, and Zendaya were photographed on set.  A strong build and a rough grey beard are features of Damon's metamorphosis into Odysseus that allude to a character-driven and physically demanding performance.

Still regarded as a trailblazer in the film industry, Christopher Nolan won Academy Awards for both producing and directing ‘Oppenheimer’.  His emphasis on using IMAX for the whole filming of ‘The Odyssey’ demonstrates his commitment to the cinematic medium and gives viewers a degree of visual reality and depth that conventional formats cannot match.

Although there have been a number of film adaptations of ‘The Odyssey’ over the years, Christopher Nolan's version seems poised to become the standard big-screen version.  This adaptation is poised to reinvent epic storytelling for a new generation, led by one of Hollywood's most renowned directors, an all-star cast, and innovative technology.

On 17th July, 2026, ‘The Odyssey’ opens in theaters, promising a memorable voyage through myth and the history of film.
