‘Constantine 2’ Director Francis Lawrence Says Sequel Is ‘Closer Than Ever’

The eagerly anticipated follow-up to the 2005 movie is finally moving forward, nearly twenty years after Keanu Reeves played John Constantine on the big screen. In an exclusive interview with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, filmmaker Francis Lawrence stated that ‘Constantine 2’ is closer than ever to being a reality while promoting the 4K release of the first film. He has been actively working on a concept that he, Reeves, and producer Akiva Goldsman are truly enthusiastic about.

The crew feels they have something genuinely intriguing in the works, and despite years of challenges, the spooky thriller is still a passion project for all those involved. Lawrence stressed that the picture is in the best condition it has ever been as it approaches production.

Reeves played John Constantine in the original 2005 film, an exorcist and occult investigator who had the unusual capacity to identify angels and demons residing among people. Constantine was momentarily taken to Hell after a near-death experience in his youth, and as a result, he is destined to return there after he dies. He tries to redeem himself by driving out demons and keeping Heaven and Hell in balance, but his fate is set in stone. The film gained a cult following thanks to Reeves’ sombre portrayal and its blend of religious horror and detective fiction, which sparked fan desire for a sequel almost twenty years later.

Despite Reeves’ constant excitement in playing the part again, ‘Constantine 2’ encountered several obstacles for years. The creative team has finally figured out the plot after much brainstorming. In order to create a new story based on their passion for the character and the setting, Lawrence revealed that they had spent years going over the comics that have been published since the first movie.

Along with information about Lawrence’s ‘Bioshock’ adaption and the upcoming ‘Hunger Games’ movie, further details about ‘Constantine 2’ should be available soon.
