Cynthia Erivo Advocates for Elphaba’s Micro-Braids in ‘Wicked’ to Reflect Her Identity as a Black Woman

Cynthia Erivo recently talked about the little touches she made to her ‘Wicked’ character Elphaba. The 37-year-old actress talked about her choice to give Elphaba microbraids in an interview with Variety. This change was made from the character’s customary lengthy, dark waves in the stage show. Erivo clarified that in addition to wanting the braids to be long and move, she also wanted them to have a unique texture that represented her identity as a Black woman.

Erivo further highlighted how the braids helped her establish a personal connection with Elphaba by acting as a direct conduit between the two of them. Erivo’s uniqueness was also represented in Elphaba’s long nails, which echoed the actress’s personal fashion sense.

Erivo clarified that Elphaba’s character development was significantly influenced by her nail art, which represented her transformation as a woman and a witch. According to cosmetics and hair designer Frances Hannon, Erivo herself had an influence on the length and shade of her nails, which changed as her powers did.

Erivo said her performance of Elphaba is a tribute to individuals who have ever felt out of place, especially Black women who have not always been welcomed in certain locations. Only Erivo and Alexia Khadime are Black women who have portrayed the Wicked Witch of the West. Being the one bringing this character to life makes her proud, and she hopes that her portrayal will speak to people who feel excluded or different.
