Daisy Edgar-Jones Defends ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ from Negative Reviews

Despite receiving mixed reviews, Daisy Edgar-Jones is sticking by her 2022 film ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’.

The 26-year-old actress admitted in a recent interview with Elle that critics weren't particularly complimentary of the Olivia Newman-directed mystery drama.  Nonetheless, she disclosed that the reception from viewers has been extraordinarily good, with numerous individuals informing her that it is their favorite movie.  She talked about how fulfilling that felt and how much fun it was to make the film, adding that she thinks it's a fantastic movie.

She discussed the subjectivity of art and how each person's unique experiences and background influence their responses.  All an artist can do, in her opinion, is approach a project honestly and use the experience to develop and learn.

The 2018 best-selling book by Delia Owens served as the inspiration for ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’.  Edgar-Jones portrays Kya, a young lady who, in the 1950s and 1960s, grows up alone in the marshes close to Barkley Cove, North Carolina, and who later faces trial for the murder of the town's most popular young man.  David Strathairn, Jojo Regina, Garret Dillahunt, Ahna O'Reilly, Sterling Macer Jr., Michael Hyatt, Harris Dickinson, and Taylor John Smith are also featured in the movie.

Edgar-Jones, who gained popularity with the show ‘Normal People’ and most recently costarred with Glen Powell in ‘Twisters’, recalled the unusual Zoom audition process she went through for ‘Crawdads.’  She talked about the bizarre experience of remotely auditioning with director Olivia Newman, who showed up on her laptop screen while she was propped up on cushions.

Additionally, she expressed how thrilled she was to collaborate with executive producer Reese Witherspoon, whose book club had read Owens' book in 2018.  It was a dream come true to meet and work with Witherspoon, whom she had adored since she was a young girl.
