Did Timothée Chalamet Wear Bob Dylan’s Real Clothes in ‘A Complete Unknown’?
During the 11th November Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards in Hollywood, costume designer Arianne Phillips disclosed that Bob Dylan still has a solid hold on his wardrobe. Despite her best attempts, Phillips was unable to obtain any of Dylan’s original clothing for Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of the legendary artist in James Mangold’s upcoming biopic, ‘A Complete Unknown’.
Phillips clarified that efforts to obtain Dylan’s clothing were unsuccessful, adding that it’s normal practice when making biopics about well-known people. She encountered similar difficulties when creating the costumes for historical dramas like ‘W.E.’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, as well as ‘Walk the Line’, which was about Johnny Cash and June Carter. It appears that Bob was unwilling to part with his clothing, which is probably still hidden away in his closet, says Phillips.

Dylan’s personal clothing was not allowed, but Phillips described how Chalamet gave the part his all. The actor made sure his portrayal of the young Dylan was as genuine as possible by investing a lot of time in vocal training, guitar and harmonica instruction, and rehearsals. During the film’s roughly 70 costume changes, Chalamet put in endless hours during fittings, and Phillips praised his dedication, kindness, and teamwork.
Set in the early 1960s, ‘A Complete Unknown’ chronicles Dylan’s journey as a 19-year-old who relocates to New York City, makes significant decisions that alter the cultural landscape, and navigates the folk music scene. The film, which also stars Boyd Holbrook, Edward Norton, and Scoot McNairy, aims to introduce Dylan’s legacy to a new generation of Dylan fans.
On 25th December the biopic opens in theaters.
