Director Confirms Plans For 'The Wild Robot' Sequel

The adventures of ‘The Wild Robot’ are set to continue, with plans for a sequel already in motion. Director Chris Sanders confirmed that a second film is in the works, stating, “100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one,” as the DreamWorks animated feature continues to perform well at the box office.

In the original film, Lupita Nyong’o lends her voice to Roz, a robot who crash-lands on an island and learns to survive with the help of the local wildlife. Roz eventually becomes the mother figure to an orphaned gosling named Brightbill, voiced by Heartstopper star Kit Connor. The story is based on Peter Brown’s 2016 book ‘The Wild Robot’, the first in a trilogy.

The sequel, titled ‘The Wild Robot’ Escapes, will follow Roz as she explores a futuristic world filled with humans, robots, and cities, while still reflecting on her life on the island. Fans can expect the same heartwarming adventure and emotional depth that made the first film a hit.

Nyong’o, who voiced Roz, shared her excitement for the project at the Toronto International Film Festival. She revealed that her robotic voice in the film was inspired by AI assistants like Alexa and Siri, drawing on their optimistic and ever-positive tones as the foundation for Roz’s journey of self-discovery.

Reflecting on the film’s impact, Nyong’o expressed her joy at her nieces and nephews being able to see her work in a story with a meaningful message. “I look forward to my nieces and nephews watching this film,” she said, noting how it could become as formative for them as classics like ‘The Lion King’ were for her.

With its captivating story and star-studded cast, the upcoming sequel promises to continue the legacy of ‘The Wild Robot’ in a fresh and exciting way.
