Drake Believes Artists Should Get “Bonuses Like Athletes” For Reaching Spotify Streaming Milestone

Drake has suggested that musicians, who reach streaming milestones on Spotify, must get “bonuses like athletes.” Drake recently surpassed 75 billion streams on the platform, which made him the first artist to do so. He celebrated the feat by sharing a graphic detailing that includes Spotify’s logo. However, the graphic does not appear on any of Spotify’s official accounts.

“We should get bonuses like athletes to motivate the future artists to be consistent and competitive,” Drake wrote in the caption. “So feel free to send me a Lebron sized cheque. I have enough dinner plates.” This makes Drake one of the many celebrities who have spoken about this in the past.

When the CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek said that it “wasn’t enough for artists to record music once every three to four years,” he received backlash from Neko Case, Nadine Shah, Jack Garratt and Zola Jesus among others. Case wrote in response, “so f*****g basic. HE keeps our royalties.” Later, Spotify was also accused of paying very less for each stream on its service.

Drake has broken multiple Spotify records with ‘Scorpion’. The album got the most streams for an album in a single day. He then became the first artist to reach 50 billion streams across multiple platforms. He surpassed his single-day Spotify milestone with ‘Certified Lover Boy’, which garnered 153 million streams within 24 hours of its release.
