Duran Duran Celebrates 40th Anniversary Of ‘Planet Earth’
The band that defined England’s “New Romantic” Scene, Duran Duran celebrates the 40th anniversary of their debut single ‘Planet Earth’. The track set off a string of incredible hits hat also helped achieve their feat. People first heard the term in the lyrics of the track that go, “I heard you making patterns rhyme. Like some new romantic looking for the TV sound.”
Watch this video of Duran Duran playing the track on Swedish television show, Måndagsbörsen, below.
The performance was telecast on September 11th, 1981. With ‘Girls On Film’ also out by this time, the band had riding a high wave across the globe. Coincidentally, a month prior to this, MTV went on air in America. The channel played a lot of Duran Duran the first year in desperate need of content. Call it serendipity but this helped the band crack their way into America.
Breakups And Reunions
With good work comes a lot of ups and downs. The following four decades saw the band endure a rollercoaster ride and lineup changes as well. But four-fifths of the original band stay, planning the 40th anniversary. The band in a positive spirit of return of live concerts is planning a 40th-anniversary tour of Europe in the summer of 2021.
Audiences have seen their favourite bands break up much to their disappointment. Andy Taylor, the founding guitarist who participated in the band’s reunion album, “Astronaut” in 2004. This did not last long after Duran Duran and Taylor felt previous tension resurface and parted ways in 2006.
Hopes Of Reunion?
Duran Duran keyboardist, Nick Rhodes asked fans not to keep their hopes up for a reunion. He explained, “I don’t think, to be quite honest, he would made things any better, in any way, Andy is a great guitarist, he’s, yes, difficult to be around. When Andy was no longer with us, peace broke out and we all got along much more easily. I don’t think he fits in personality-wise with the band, really; no one will ever take away anything out his musicianship and I wish him well, but I don’t think it’s with us.”
Although, a possible introduction of a member in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame indicates a possible reunion with Taylor. This might demand their reunion at least for a few tracks considering Depeche Mode and Cure being in it. Well, even if not, 80% of the band’s OG members should please fans that show up for their anniversary tour.
