Elton John and Jake Shears’ Musical ‘Tammy Faye’ Set to Close Shortly After Opening

Elton John and Jake Shears’ new musical, Tammy Faye, has announced an early closure, ending its Broadway run on December 8, just weeks after its official opening on November 14 at the Palace Theatre. Previews for the show began on October 19. The decision comes following a series of unfavourable reviews.

With music composed by John, lyrics by Scissor Sisters’ Shears, and a book by James Graham, Tammy Faye recounts the life of American televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, who was convicted of fraud and conspiracy in 1989. By its final performance, the production will have staged 24 previews and 29 regular shows. Prior to its Broadway debut, the musical premiered at London’s Almeida Theatre in late 2022.

In other Elton John news, the legendary musician recently spoke about his children’s relationship with his fame, expressing a desire for them to live without fear and noting that they have no interest in being in the public eye.

Elton’s documentary, Never Too Late, which chronicles his preparations for his final North American stadium show at Dodger Stadium in November 2022, will premiere on Disney+ on December 13 after a limited theatrical release. The film offers an intimate glimpse into his life, featuring never-before-seen concert footage spanning 50 years, personal journals, and present-day moments with his family. It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Accompanying the documentary is a new duet titled ‘Never Too Late,’ featuring Elton and Brandi Carlile, released last week. While the song is likely a standalone release, Elton’s creative output is far from over. His longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin revealed in May that Elton’s 32nd studio album has been completed and recorded.

Meanwhile, Scissor Sisters recently announced their return as a trio, consisting of Jake Shears, Babydaddy, and Del Marquis. The group is set to embark on a UK arena tour in 2025 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album. Ana Matronic, however, will not be part of the reunion due to her podcasting commitments.
