Exploring the Link Between Ridley Scott’s Long-Awaited Western and Kurt Russell’s ‘Bone Tomahawk’

Over the past 10 years, S. Craig Zahler has established himself as a unique filmmaker renowned for his aggressive and daring approach to "extreme cinema." Even though he became well-known for films like ‘Dragged Across Concrete’ and ‘Brawl in Cell Block 99’, his first feature, ‘Bone Tomahawk’, cemented his status as a must-see. ‘Wraiths of Broken Land’, Zahler's Western novel, was originally intended to be adapted into a horror-tinged thriller about a father and son who band together with a group of outlaws to save two sisters from a prostitution scheme.

They go across treacherous badlands and have several dangerous encounters. Zahler focused on Bone Tomahawk since it had a similar theme, but he lacked the finances to make the project a reality despite its gripping and sinister story.

It's interesting to note that after directing ‘Alien: Covenant’, Ridley Scott was once assigned to helm ‘Wraiths of the Broken Land’. Scott, however, turned his attention to other projects, such as ‘All the Money in the World’, which needed to be reshot after Kevin Spacey was replaced by Christopher Plummer because of Spacey's accusations. ‘Wraiths of the Broken Land’ was left in development limbo as Scott balanced several other projects, such as ‘The Last Duel’ and ‘House of Gucci’.

Scott has made many epics over his career, including ‘Gladiator’, ‘Kingdom of Heaven’, and ‘The Last Duel’, but he hasn't made a Western yet.

Many people think he may succeed in the genre because of his ability to make films that are both aesthetically appealing and incredibly detailed, regardless of the time period. Given his experience in horror, especially with the groundbreaking ‘Alien’, he might offer a novel and terrifying viewpoint to a Western with a strong horror element, such as ‘Wraiths of the Broken Land’. Such a project may combine Zahler's talent for visceral storytelling with Scott's strengths in historical epics, creating a singular cinematic experience.
