Fans React to Shrek’s New Look in ‘Shrek 5’

Although Shrek is returning, fans are having a heated debate about his new look.
Recently, the trailer for ‘Shrek 5’ was released, marking the return of Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Mike Myers as Shrek after a lengthy break. Zendaya was also revealed in the preview as the voice of Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. However, a lot of the online discussions have focused on how the adored characters have changed with time.
As middle-aged parents, Shrek and Fiona are shown in the teaser viewing a montage of previous events on the Magic Mirror, which includes a video of Shrek dancing in black leather that became popular on TikTok.
Social media has been inundated with memes and reactions from fans since the trailer’s release, with some expressing surprise at Shrek’s new look. On X, one user used crying emojis to express their shock, while another likened the animation style to a ‘Simpsons’ scene.

Some fans defended the new appearance by pointing out that the animation in ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ received accolades. Others, on the other hand, believed that ‘Shrek 5’s alterations were needless, claiming that the new movie’s style was a move in the wrong direction and that the previous spin-off had better visuals.
There have even been requests for DreamWorks and Universal to rework the animation as a result of the criticism. This would not be the first instance of fan input influencing a movie’s design; the studio made significant changes before the debut of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ after receiving a lot of negative feedback about Sonic’s initial appearance. Even the ‘Sonic’ franchise contributed to the discussion by sharing a TikTok video that suggested ‘Shrek 5’ might take a cue from their experience.

Fans can anticipate the franchise’s distinctive blend of humour, adventure, and pop culture references, even though there are currently few story details available. On 23rd December 2026, ‘Shrek 5’ is scheduled to make its theatrical debut.
