‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Trailer Teases a Killer ‘80s Adventure in Latest R.L. Stine Book Adaptation

Get ready for a deadly prom season in the latest ‘Fear Street’ flick, ‘Prom Queen’! The first trailer for the eagerly awaited slasher, which is set in the 1980s and is based on R.L. Stine’s 1992 book of the same name, was released recently.

The official logline for the film promises an exhilarating ride as Shadyside High’s prom season heats up.   The school’s “It Girls” are all competing to be prom queen, but things take a horrible turn when an unafraid outsider enters the competition and the other competitors start to mysteriously disappear. All of a sudden, the class of ’88 will have a memorable prom night.

India Fowler plays Lori Granger, a resolute outsider vying for the throne against the current queens. The trailer features Lori against Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza), the school’s ruthless queen bee, who has it out for her. It is set to the classic hit song ‘Heaven Is a Place on Earth’ by Belinda Carlisle.  Lori shows up looking set to win the crown as prom night draws near, but it soon becomes apparent that this prom will not be your average high school dance.

In the teaser, Megan Rogers (Suzanna Son), Lori’s best friend, says, “It’s Shadyside — when’s it all going to go wrong?”  implying a dark and mysterious past.  As Lori’s plans for the evening take a tragic turn, the tension increases.

In his commentary, director and co-writer Matt Palmer said that ‘Prom Queen’ transports viewers back to the eerie 1988 village of Shadyside.  There is intense competition for prom queen with senior prom just a few days away, but when someone starts snooping on the contenders, mayhem breaks out.  Palmer promises an homage to the slashers of the 1980s, complete with dancing, nostalgic music, and, of course, lots of blood.

He also considers how Shadyside’s hardships seem more pertinent today, comparing the difficulties faced by youths in the 1980s to those faced by young people today.  Beyond simply being a slasher, ‘Prom Queen’ delves deeper into high school and family life, reflecting the constant stresses that young people confront.

When ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ launches on 23rd May, fans can tune in.
