Perry’s portrayal of Chandler Bing on ‘Friends’ is beloved by viewers worldwide. The witty, fast-talking character brought joy and laughter to millions of people during the show’s ten-season run from 1994 to 2004. Perry’s performance earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2002, underscoring his undeniable talent and comedic genius.
However, alongside his professional success, Perry faced a long and public struggle with substance abuse, which significantly affected his career. Later in life, he channelled his experiences into helping others on the path to recovery. His 2022 book, ‘Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir,’ provided insight into his personal journey, aiming to support those grappling with similar challenges. In the book, he candidly shared his struggles and offered a sense of solidarity to those fighting addiction.
One particularly poignant passage from his memoir reads, “Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead. I don’t write any of this so anyone will feel sorry for me — I write these words because someone else may be confused by the fact that they know they should stop drinking — like me, they have all the information, and they understand the consequences — but they still can’t stop drinking. You are not alone, my brothers and sisters.”
