FX Reveals ‘Shōgun’ Season 2 Details and Confirms Production Start Date

FX is set to return to feudal Japan with the exciting announcement of the season two premiere for its Emmy-winning drama ‘Shōgun’.

In January 2026, production on the next instalment of the critically acclaimed series is expected to start in Vancouver.  After FX previously revealed in May 2024 that two more seasons were in development, this statement confirms the show’s comeback.  The success of the first season, which included a record-breaking 18 Emmy victories, made a continuation all but inevitable.

The writers’ room for the upcoming season was just completed by showrunners and co-creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks.  Season two, which is set ten years after the end of season one, will carry on the plot beyond the events of the book, even though the first installment closely matched James Clavell’s novel.

A first look at the upcoming season was released by FX, which revealed that it will examine the continuing, entwined lives of two men from very different origins.  Hiroyuki Sanada returns as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, a role for which he won an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama. John Blackthorne, the English sailor whose shipwrecked landing in Japan initiated the original drama, will be played by Cosmo Jarvis again.  Additional casting for the upcoming season has not yet been released, however, these are the first confirmed cast members.

In addition, Sanada will be joining Kondo, Michaela Clavell,  Edward L. McDonnell, Marks, and Michael De Luca as executive producers for season two.  FX Productions is in charge of producing the series.

In addition to receiving praise from critics, ‘Shōgun’ is currently FX’s most-watched series.
