George Clooney Shares Reason for Wife Amal Skipping ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ Premiere

George Clooney clarified that his wife, Amal Clooney, was caring for their kids and couldn’t make it to his Broadway debut.  Without her by his side, the Oscar-winning actor, who penned and starred in the stage version of ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’, celebrated the official Broadway opening recently in New York City.

He said that Amal, 47, stayed at home with their twins, Ella and Alexander, who are 7 years old.  To help him throughout his time in the production, the family just relocated to New York.  George talked about how much they adore the city and how simple it is to fall in love in New York during an appearance on ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ in February.  He added that because plays are performed at night, working on one enables him to spend time with his kids during the day.

Like the 2005 movie, the play narrates the events surrounding the well-known Senator Joseph McCarthy exposé by CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow.  George played producer Fred W. Friendly in the film, but he plays Murrow on stage, first represented by David Strathairn, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance.

For directing ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ and co-writing the screenplay with Grant Heslov, George was nominated for an Academy Award that same year.  For his performance in Syriana, he received a third nomination and won Best Supporting Actor.  He once again collaborated with Heslov to produce the script for the stage adaptation.  Tony Award winner David Cromer, who also helmed this season’s new musical ‘Dead Outlaw’, is directing the production.

This is George’s first theatrical appearance since he starred in the Sid Vicious play ‘Vicious’ in 1986, first in Los Angeles and then at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago.  He played a male drug dealer and prostitute in that role, which helped him get his first agency and on-screen acting gigs.

‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ performances run until 8th June.
