Glen Powell Shares Hilarious Childhood Story That Made Him ‘So Grossed Out’ by Ketchup

Although Glen Powell has always loved sauces, there was a period when he was repulsed by one specific flavor.

The 36-year-old ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ star revealed how his passion for food and family customs served as the inspiration for his new line, Smash Kitchen, as he got ready to launch it.  Even though he now loves ketchup, there was a time in his early years when he avoided it for a long time.

Powell remembered as a child slathering everything with ketchup.  After he and the other boys had to sleep outside on a trampoline during a sleepover at a friend’s house, that changed.  Inside, his friend’s sister and her pals were preparing a practical joke.

The girls ran outdoors at night and covered the boys with ketchup.  The incident was made worse by the fact that the ketchup had been sitting in the Texas sun by the time Powell woke up.  He immediately dove into the water after becoming completely repulsed, but he was never able to tolerate ketchup again.

Powell claims that working on Smash Kitchen helped him rediscover his passion for ketchup, despite the terrible event.  He’s not only liking ketchup again, but he’s also creating it himself now.

Featuring traditional condiments like ketchup, mayo, and mustard as well as unusual varieties like Hot Honey Ketchup and Hot Honey BBQ Sauce, Smash Kitchen made its formal debut recently.  Powell attributes the inspiration for his business to his Texas heritage and family customs.  He recalls how his grandmother fostered in his family a passion for cooking and how they frequently tried making their own sauces.

Powell has now made his family’s long-held dream of bottling their sauces a reality.  Products from Smash Kitchen, which are only sold at Walmart, are reasonably priced and produced with premium ingredients like cage-free eggs and organic tomatoes.

Powell takes satisfaction in providing something that his family and followers will love, with the hope that it would change how people think about food without compromising flavor.
