Gotye’s Song ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ Surpasses 2 Billion YouTube Views
Gotye, a 42-year-old Belgian singer, just reached a significant milestone. The music video for his 11-year-old hit song ‘Somebody That I Used to Know,’ which features Kimbra from New Zealand, has already received 2 billion views on YouTube!
In the video, Gotye and Kimbra can be seen standing in front of a canvas that is being painted with varying shades while appearing to be naked. The wall print fades in as the two perform their respective sections of the breakup ballad. Although the song’s content is profound and helped shape the 2010s music industry, the video may have a straightforward idea.
Prior to its official release, the audio for ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ was leaked on iTunes and was played in Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands! The rest is history!
“iTunes, YouTube and Facebook — at the different points, they were at — all had a pretty big impact on how this song and video were shared initially,” Gotye told Billboard. “To even have a few hundred million views, it was one of the most-watched music videos at that time.”
