Green Day-Inspired Comedy Film in Development: Here’s What We Know

Currently in development is a comedic movie that draws inspiration from Green Day’s early years. All three members of Green Day are producing the road trip comedy ‘New Years Rev’, which Live Nation Productions are creating. Filming is presently taking place in Oklahoma.

The plot centres on three buddies who think they have been given the opening act role for a Green Day New Year’s concert in Los Angeles. Their journey turns into a life-changing experience as they traverse the nation. Green Day’s early years, when they lived and travelled in a van, performing small-scale basement gigs in strange cities, served as the inspiration for the movie.

Ryan Foust, Kylr Coffman, and Mason Thames play the main characters as the gang of buddies setting out on this crazy adventure. Along with Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo, the son of actor Mark Ruffalo, the cast also includes Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey from The Office. The film, which Lee Kirk is directing, does not yet have a release date.

In his reflection on the inspiration for the movie, Billie Joe Armstrong recalled the band’s early touring years as a period of restless nights, lengthy car rides, and doing little gigs for small audiences. He underlined that, despite the difficulties, touring with bandmates was an experience unlike any other and felt like family.

The enthusiasm of young artists pursuing their aspirations, motivated by the excitement of performing live, is captured in ‘New Years Rev’, according to Ryan Kroft of Live Nation Productions. The film is a celebration of the unadulterated joy of live music, with Green Day leading the project and a gifted cast bringing the story to life.

Green Day, meanwhile, is still in the news. The band is still available to perform at this year’s Glastonbury festival in late June, and they are rumoured to be the major act in 2025. Their planned European tour has stoked rumours that they would perform at Worthy Farm.

Green Day’s 14th studio album, ‘Saviors’, was released in January of last year and was well-reviewed by critics.
