Grimes has teased the release of her long-awaited new track
'Shinigami Eyes,' on Twitter, which will be released later this week. Grimes
tweeted on 20th January in what appeared to be binary code, but when
translated into English, the message reads: “SHINIGAMI EYES JAN 26”.

She followed it up with a brief clip of an eye that also
featured a series of ones and zeros that translated to: 01 26 22, or January
26, 2022.

The song was first teased on Grimes' Discord in June last
year, then in August of 2021, she uploaded a video called "Shinigami
Eyes" on YouTube, which featured 30 seconds of previously unheard audio.
She also let fans pre-save the tune around the same time, but it was never
released.

Shinigami Eyes is also a browser extension that uses different
colours to highlight transphobic and trans-friendly social media pages and
users. The name of the browser was inspired by the Death Note anime, in which
having "shinigami eyes" means being able to see people's names and
remaining lifespan simply by looking at them.

It could also be a reference to Grimes' claim of receiving experimental eye surgery in 2019. However, doctors later debunked the theory that blue light can be removed through surgery.

The preview for 'Shinigami Eyes' comes after the announcement
that Grimes will be featured in a Rocket League in-game event dubbed 'Neon
Nights,' which will feature a succession of Grimes-inspired products and music
over the course of two weeks. ‘Neon Nights’ runs January 26 to February 8.

Grimes debuted her 'Book1' era in December with the song 'Player Of Games,' which was accompanied by a fantasy-themed video. 'Book 1' is Grimes' first album since leaving 4AD and signing with Columbia, and it will be the follow-up to 2020's 'Miss Anthropocene.' A release date for the album has yet to be determined. Grimes will release a 10-year anniversary version of 'Visions' via vinyl subscription service Vinyl Me in February.
