Halle Berry Opens Up About 3-Year Dating Break After Olivier Martinez Split

After her 2015 split from ex-husband Olivier Martinez, Halle Berry decided to take a break from dating to focus on herself. In an interview for Marie Claire’s latest cover story, the Oscar-winning actress, now 58, reflected on the three-year “sabbatical” she took following the end of her two-year marriage to Martinez, also 58.

Berry described this time as crucial for self-discovery, where she focused on therapy, traveled to India, studied meditation, and immersed herself in reading. “I created my career with intention, but I hadn’t been intentional with my relationships,” she explained. “You need to be clear with the universe, or you’ll attract just anything.”

During this period of reflection, Berry began writing detailed lists of what she sought in a partner. Not long after, her current relationship with musician Van Hunt seemed to materialize. She recalled how Hunt’s brother, whom she had known for years, introduced them, saying, “You should meet my brother.” The couple first connected in 2020, initially communicating only by phone for four months due to the pandemic. They went public with their relationship in September of that year and have been together ever since.

Reflecting on her romantic journey, Berry acknowledged that it took time to “get it right.” However, she now believes Hunt is “her person,” adding, “The way this happened makes me feel like this is it.”

Before her marriage to Martinez, Berry was married to former MLB player David Justice and singer-songwriter Eric Benét. She also shares a daughter, Nahla, with model Gabriel Aubry. With Martinez, Berry has a 10-year-old son, Maceo, though the former couple has been in court recently over custody issues. Despite their different parenting styles, both parents are committed to Maceo’s well-being.

Berry’s latest film, ‘Never Let Go’, hits theatres on 20th September.
