Halsey Faces Alter-Ego in Gritty ’90s-Inspired ‘Ego’ Music Video

Halsey has shared their latest single, ‘Ego’, from the upcoming album ‘The Great Impersonator’. The ’90s alt-inspired track sees the pop star exploring public perceptions and personal struggles, with Halsey revealing in a teaser, “I really thought this album would be the last one I ever made.”

The music video features Halsey in retro outfits, imagining different personas they might have embodied in past decades. “What if I debuted in the early 2000s? The ’90s? The ’80s? The ’70s?” they ask in a voiceover. “Am I still Halsey in every timeline? Do I still get sick? Do I become a mom?”

In the trailer, Halsey draws inspiration from iconic figures like Annie Lennox, David Bowie, and Britney Spears, whose song ‘Lucky’ they recently interpolated in another single. The visual includes snippets of unreleased music, each reflecting a different era’s aesthetic.

Halsey’s self-directed video, ‘Ego’, presents a femme version of the artist confronting a more masculine alter-ego. The two characters engage in a tense battle, chasing each other through a house and attempting to kill one another, symbolising internal conflict.

The video climaxes with the femme Halsey hiding in the back of the alter-ego’s car and choking them, bringing the visual to a dramatic conclusion. This intense and introspective visual highlights the ongoing theme of identity and perception explored throughout Halsey’s latest work.

As fans eagerly await the full album, ‘Ego’ offers a glimpse into the raw emotion and layered artistry that continues to define Halsey’s music.
