Halsey has shared a four-track remix
album for If I Can’t Have Love, I Want
Power

single “I
Am Not A Woman, I’m A God” featuring contributions from Hot Chip, Underworld’s
Drift, On-U and Gazelle Twin. The song is a
part of the singer’s fourth studio album ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.

“I remember
hearing the Halsey single ‘Now Or Never’ in a cab in LA and thinking it was a
great pop song,” Joe Goddard of Hot Chip wrote on Twitter. “And when we were
told that for her new album she was collaborating with Trent Reznor it seemed
like a fun prospect and an exciting thing to work on.”

“I think that Trent has an amazing talent for working
with synths and for me part of the joy of remixing is being able to pull apart
a song and hear its constituent parts,” Goddard continued. “For our remix we
imagined the kind of Balearic disco that you might find at Pikes or Despacio.”

All the four remixes approached the song with clear-cut sonic
settings. For example, the Gazelle Twin remix situates “I Am Not A Woman, I’m A
God” in an eerie, ghastly setting whereas Underworld’s Drift takes the approach
of a more haunting sound.

“I wanted
cinematic, really unsettling production,” Halsey said of “I Am Not A Woman, I’m
A God” in a recent interview with Apple Music, mentioning that producers
Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails “wanted to know if I was
willing to take the risk—I was.”

Last month, Halsey performed a live version of the track which features accompanying visual elements that reflects her affinity for gore. In the live video, Halsey stares intently at the camera while singing, as the stage flashes with coloured strobes that encompass her. About midway through “I am not a woman, I’m a god,” Halsey starts getting splattered with blood. By the end of the video, the artist is completely covered in blood like a Greco-Roman statuesque silhouette of savagery.

“Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, it’s like this is a girl power album,’ and I’m like, ‘No, it’s not,’” Halsey says. “Also, not for nothing, but the lead single is ‘I Am Not a Woman, I’m a God’ — it’s not a girl power album. From the jump, I’m like, ‘I’m not a woman.’ I’m not saying any of that.”

The single is one of the two tracks
Halsey is likely prepping to perform during her appearance on the 47th
season of Saturday Night Live. The singer will be the musical guest on the
episode hosted by Kim Kardashian West on the 9th of October.

If I
Can’t Have Love, I Want Power
also boasts some huge names like Foo Fighters’
Dave Grohl
 and Fleetwood Mac’s
Lindsey Buckingham
. The album also features contributions from
legendary bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Karriem Riggins and more. In addition
to the album, Halsey also shared an hour-long film experience of the same name
which was written by Halsey and directed by Colin Tilley.
