Hans Zimmer Shares He Writes Music for an Imaginary Woman Called Doris

Hans Zimmer, the Oscar-winning composer, has revealed the special inspiration that went into creating his renowned movie themes.

Throughout a four-decade career, Zimmer has composed iconic music for movies and television shows, including ‘Gladiator’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ‘Dune’, and other projects with filmmaker Christopher Nolan.  The new concert film ‘Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert’, which debuted in theatres in March, now honours his incredible journey.

Zimmer told Deadline during the movie's promotion that he doesn't compose music for studios, producers, or filmmakers.  Rather, he imagines a fictional character named Doris.  In his imagination, Doris is a dedicated single mother from Bradford, UK, who works endlessly to support her two rowdy kids.  She can choose to spend her hard-earned money on a movie or unwind with friends at the pub after a demanding week.  Zimmer writes with her in mind, making sure that the experience will be well worth the money if she decides to go to the movies.

According to Zimmer, Doris is the audience he writes for; she stands in for the people he wishes to honour and engage with through his writing.

Zimmer has voiced his displeasure at ‘Dune: Part Two's score being rejected from the Oscars for using pre-existing material, despite his ongoing success.  Rather than being truly offended, he brushed the rationale aside as absurd.

Zimmer, who shows no signs of slowing down in his creative endeavours, announced plans to reinvent Saudi Arabia's national anthem in addition to the premiere of his concert film.
