13 years with Taylor Swift has been a LONG ride for Swifties but we can’t get enough of her music because man, doe she know how to make us feel understood. She has taken us on a journey from country music to being a world-famous pop star bagging awards like it’s no big deal.
T-Swift, born in the year 1989, produced one of the best albums of her career titled “1989” in 2014. It was the best-selling album of the year challenging the rise of digital album sales/ online streaming platforms and the fall of physical album sales. To celebrate the release of the album on this day, that year, we look back at some lyrical gems featured on the release!
You’ve got that long hair slicked back, white t-shirt
And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
‘Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style
The disco funk pop track “Style” was another track that had all her fans believing it to be another diss track from her ex Harry Styles. While the lyrics were ambiguous, contemporary publications interpreted the song as a walk down to her past with Harry “Styles”, get it?
You’re the king baby I’m your Queen
Find out what you want
Be that girl for a month
Wait the worst is yet to come
“Blank Space” took us all into insane lover mode where we completely owned the craziness that love can bring out in all of us.
The killer pop track reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 following “Shake It Off” making Swift to the first woman in the Hot 100’s 56-year history to beat herself to the top spot. The writing was a cheeky jab at the press who constantly scrutinised her personal relationships.
Band-Aids don’t fix bullet holes
You say sorry just for show
You live like that, you live with ghosts.
Another controversial track from “1989” was the track “Bad Blood”. Swift wrote the song about an “undisclosed female musician”. Swift says the artist attempted to sabotage one of her concert tours by hiring people who worked for her. Fans and media drew parallels between “Bad Blood”‘s lyric “If you live like that, you live with ghosts” and “Ghost”, a song from Perry’s 2013 album ‘Prism’.
One thing’s for sure, Swift writes from her heart, and that keeps her at the top! Happy Birthday to 1989 – a pop masterpiece!
