Happy Birthday Khalid
Over the past few years, Khalid has truly bloomed as a musician. For someone so young, making it this far in the music industry in a matter of few years, clearly proves that he’s an extremely gifted artist. His 2017 debut LP, ‘American Teen’, was a masterpiece in itself as the coming-of-age record perfectly embodied what it was like to grow up in a world that seemed to be moving too fast.
Now, more recently, his tracks have once again found their spot on the top of charts world over. From songs like ‘Talk’ to ‘Beautiful People’, he’s clearly struck a chord with people from every corner of the world, which is not an easy feat. Perhaps a great deal of it comes from his lyrics which always tell stories in the most profound, beautiful way.
So, let’s take a peek at some of his most moving lyrics.
You don’t know your worth
All the things I know that you deserve
Say it’s not real if it doesn’t hurt
Find someone you know will put you first
Find someone who loves you at your worst
Gotta keep, gotta keep, gotta keep your head up
‘Know Your Worth’ definitely sits at the top of this list, as its truly become quite the millennial anthem.
This is his second single of 2020 and he teamed up with Disclosure, for this track, not too long after the duo worked on the chart topping hit, ‘Talk’. “When I started writing this song, it was like I was singing to myself in the mirror,” Khalid explained, “I feel like the message in this song is something that I needed to hear at the time I was writing it and I hope that it resonates with a lot of people who need to hear that kind of message,” he added.
Jump and we think, leave it all in the game of love
Love
Run into sin, do it all in the name of fun
Fun
Whoa-oa-oa
I’m so high at the moment
I’m so caught up in this
Yeah, we’re just young, dumb and broke
But we still got love to give
This one’s from ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ and Khalid bottles high school nostalgia perfectly in this catchy single which features on his debut album ‘American Teen’. Once again, the artist’s doing something very clever with his lyrics. While they come across as incredibly relatable, reading these lines also brings an immense sense of comfort. Especially when you think, “Oh, so perhaps Khalid’s also experienced this.” And the takeaway from this track is simple yet impactful, at the end of the day, if you can love yourself, what you do and the people around you, then that’s all that really matters.
But I know some day I’ll make it out of here
Even if it takes all night or a hundred years
Need a place to hide, but I can’t find one near
Wanna feel alive, outside I can fight my fear
Khalid collaborated with the up and coming Billie Eilish on the heartbreaking track, ‘Lovely’, back in 2018. With Billie’s impeccable high notes and his soulful melodies, this track complements their vocals brilliantly. The lyrics speak of overcoming the fears that creep into our daily lives and learning how to love despite it. With an underlying sense of yearning, for both love and hope, this track’s found its home in all of us.
Gave you all the signs
Gave you all of my time, my love
You’re followin’ the signs
But you’re followin’ the wrong signs, my love
This one’s from ‘My Bad’, one of Khalid’s lesser known tracks that feature on his album, ‘Free Spirit’. Much like the other songs on his album, this one’s relaxed, laid back and yet, Khalid manages to keep it both relevant and introspective. Over a guitar-driven melody, the young star talks about how arguing in a relationship just “isn’t worth it.” It’s nothing we haven’t heard before and yet, his writing ability just shines through, putting his message across in a rather unique, unconventional way.
So, as much as we enjoy his songs, it’s worth reading through his lyrics too. Not only do they reveal his phenomenal skills as a songwriter but they also show us that what he puts out there, always, always comes from the heart.
