Hideo Kojima Already Has a Concept in Mind for Death Stranding 3

Legendary game director Hideo Kojima has revealed that he already has an idea for a potential third installment in the Death Stranding series. This news arrives as Kojima Productions prepares to launch its second title, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, following the success of the original 2019 release.
Scheduled for release on June 24, Death Stranding 2 will pick up 11 months after the events of the first game. Players will once again step into the role of Sam Bridges, who is now living in Mexico with his bridge baby, Lou. While many details about the sequel remain under wraps, Kojima has begun to hint at the series’ future beyond this upcoming title.
During a recent Q&A, Kojima discussed the broader direction of the Death Stranding franchise and shared some early thoughts on what a third game might involve. He pointed to a new feature in Death Stranding 2, the “Plate Gate” mechanic, as a potential foundation for expanding the series. This system, which enables fast travel between North America and Australia, could open up the world significantly. Kojima mentioned to VGC that the mechanic’s potential had sparked ideas for multiple sequels, suggesting that the concept could support an ongoing series.

However, despite this early vision for Death Stranding 3, Kojima clarified that there are currently no concrete plans to develop a third game. He emphasized that if a sequel were to happen, he would not return as director. Instead, he would likely hand over the project to a different team, possibly due to his growing list of commitments.
Once Death Stranding 2 is released, Kojima Productions will shift focus to OD, a new title being co-developed with filmmaker Jordan Peele. Although first announced in 2023, little is currently known about the game beyond a few early visuals.
Looking further ahead, Kojima appears ready to explore new creative territory. After OD, he plans to revisit the tactical espionage genre with Physint, a hybrid project being developed in partnership with PlayStation Studios that is expected to span both gaming and cinema.
For now, the future of the Death Stranding universe remains uncertain, but Kojima’s comments suggest the door isn’t entirely closed on the possibility of a third chapter. Would you like a shorter version of this as well?
