Hugh Grant Calls for Laptop Ban in Schools

Hugh Grant has publicly stated his opposition to laptop use in schools, arguing that kids already depend too much on screens and that more technology in the classroom is not necessary.  The actor, who has five children, recently shared his views at an event at London’s Knightsbridge School.

Grant criticised the increasing usage of Chromebooks in the classroom, citing a school’s choice to give one to every student as a turning point in his career.  He believed that the action was needless and detrimental for both parents and students, and that it was too gloatingly celebrated.  Speaking openly to the audience, he characterised himself as simply another irritated parent who is stuck in the never-ending battle with kids who appear to be drawn to screens all the time.

Dr. Jonathan Haidt, an American psychologist and author of ‘The Anxiety Generation,’ spoke at the event and advocates for stricter digital restrictions in schools. In line with Grant’s concerns, he is in favour of prohibiting smartphones for individuals under the age of 14 and limiting access to social media until the age of 16.

On Instagram, the campaign group declared that a recording of Grant’s address would be released shortly.  He has previously expressed his opinions on the issue.  He participated in Winkleman’s private Zoom session in February, where he expressed his strong support for Dr. Haidt and characterised the tech sector as a potent force that has a detrimental effect on children’s development.

Grant has also recently talked about an awkward incident at Heathrow Airport, where he felt humiliated and upset when an immigration officer asked his kids in a whisper if he and his wife were actually their parents.

Despite being most recognised for his romantic comedy parts, Grant has been expanding his filmography.  He reprised his role as Daniel Cleaver in ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy’ earlier this year after playing a villain in the horror movie ‘Heretic’ in 2024.  Although the movie debuted on Peacock in the US, it was a huge box office hit in the UK and, at one time, even outsold ‘Barbie’.
