The commercial, which was directed by ILLIMITEWORLD of Baltimore, aired during Game 3 of the NBA playoffs on 8th May. In a montage of monochromatic, stylized photos, Lil Baby and Memphis Grizzlies member Ja Morant is featured. It’s almost like a music video for ‘Dark Mode,’ with Lil Baby riffing on his popularity and rapping prowess with an astounding line of basketball metaphors on the tune.

Lil Baby said that Morant was one of his favourite athletes to watch, in a press statement released after the ad’s release. He described his friendship with the basketballer as “locked in.” “This isn’t his first collaboration with Beats, but they took things to the next level with this original tune. For the first time, the globe gets to experience ‘Dark Mode’ in a bizarre way.

Lil Baby also released a remix of Ed Sheeran’s “2step” last month, with all proceeds going to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

‘Dark Mode’ is the second time in as many months that a musician has used a Beats By Dre commercial to promote new music that has yet to be released. Diddy debuted a new single with The Weeknd in a Beats ad starring college footballer Kayvon Thibodeaux last month.
