In Ridley Scott’s Biopic ‘Napoleon,’ Joaquin Phoenix Dazzles in His Role of The Magnificent French Emperor

In Ridley Scott’s grand historical biopic centred on the life of the renowned military commander Napoleon Bonaparte, the film opens with the iconic last words of the French emperor: “France… Army… Josephine.” Delving into the larger-than-life narrative, the movie captures the essence of Napoleon’s remarkable journey to prominence during the tumultuous era of the French Revolution.

In Ridley Scott’s depiction of Napoleon, Joaquin Phoenix is introduced as a gunnery officer amidst a revolution, aspiring to transcend the perceptions of being merely a Corsican brute or a thug. It is at the Siege of Toulon that his stature takes a significant leap as he masterminds a daring gambit, dealing a substantial blow to the British forces.

Nevertheless, he exhibits a jealous streak, almost akin to that of a child, particularly in matters concerning his wife, Josephine. As Napoleon marches towards Egypt, his numerous letters to Josephine go unanswered, only for him to discover later that she has taken a lover. Confronted with the betrayal, he abandons his troops and returns home upon realising his wife’s infidelity.

Coming to the performances, Phoenix impeccably embodies the character of Napoleon, showcasing brilliance in every aspect. Whether displaying wit or navigating emotional moments, the actor shines in every frame. Conversely, Vanessa Kirby steals the spotlight with her portrayal of Josephine. Her nuanced performance stands out as one of the best in her career.
