James Gunn Reveals What Really Happened to Henry Cavill’s Superman Suit

Henry Cavill’s role as the legendary superhero has officially ended, as James Gunn has announced that Cavill’s Superman outfit has been destroyed. With a Superman reboot that stars David Corenswet as a younger Clark Kent, DC Studios is taking a new approach. To give the character a new beginning, Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran revealed in 2022 that Cavill, who had played Superman since ‘Man of Steel’ (2013), would be leaving the role. Although some fans were taken aback and dismayed by this shift, anticipation for Corenswet’s role debut is building.

According to reports, actor Tom Brittney, who tried out for the role, unintentionally destroyed the old outfit during screen testing for the new Superman. Brittney mockingly attributed the accident to his body since he had to be “sewn” into the form-fitting garment, which eventually tore.

During his own screen test, Gunn subsequently verified that Corenswet’s taller frame also resulted in the suit tearing beyond repair, rendering it useless. Despite not choosing him, Gunn jokingly called Brittney one of his favourite performers, and Brittney praised Corenswet, stating that he appeared “born to play Superman.”

Gunn recently said that the trailer for the future ‘Superman’ movie, which is scheduled to be released on 11th July 2025, is ready but may be postponed to meet the marketing schedules of other DC films, as fans wait for further information. Fans are excited to see what Corenswet brings to the role in this new ‘Superman’ period under Gunn and Safran’s creative direction, despite the developments surrounding Cavill’s exit.
