The DC Universe's Creature Commandos series is set to make its debut soon. In contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC is embracing fresh comic-based stories and exploring a darker, unique tone within its franchise.
As the studio pushes forward with this R-rated series, CEO and director James Gunn has revealed how ‘Creature Commandos’ will integrate into the wider DCU continuity. In an interview, Gunn explained how the series will break away from the conventional Marvel format.

Discussing the show's distinct style, Gunn shared, “The thing I've always loved about DC Comics is that, while there are mainstream comics, there are also tonally distinct ones like ‘Watchmen’, ‘The Dark Knight Returns’, and ‘All-Star Superman’. He emphasised that DC’s uniqueness lies in its variety, and he intends to maintain that within the studio, ensuring each project reflects the creative vision of its artists.
While a new Superman movie is also in development at DC Studios, directed by Gunn, Creature Commandos promises to offer something different. Viewers can expect a show filled with monstrous characters battling not just heroes, but also their own troubled pasts. The cast includes notable names such as Anya Chalotra, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, Viola Davis, Indira Varma, and Zoe Chao.
Reports suggest the series may resemble the style of ‘Suicide Squad’ and Marvel’s ‘Guardians’ of ‘the Galaxy trilogy’. Gunn elaborated, “I'm used to dealing with oddballs, irregular types, and weirdos. That's what Guardians is, and ‘Creature Commandos’ are like Guardians without the sentimentality.
The Guardians are good at heart, but that’s not necessarily true for these creatures.” The series synopsis hints at a darker theme, describing it as “a black-ops team formed from prisoners, laying the foundation for the Suicide Squad.”
