Jane Fonda Reveals Director’s Harsh Words Nearly Made Her Quit Acting After First Film

Before her acting career even got off, Jane Fonda nearly quit.
The now 87-year-old actress was prepared to retire after appearing in her debut movie, ‘Tall Story’ since she didn’t love the role. Her confidence was severely damaged when she remembered director-producer Josh Logan making a nasty comment about her appearance, implying that she should have her jaw broken to lessen the puffiness of her cheeks.
But when she was chosen for ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ by director Edward Dmytryk in 1962, her viewpoint shifted. Fonda was able to relate to the character of Kitty Twist, a disobedient young lady who ends up in a posh brothel, and her love for acting is rekindled.
She relocated to Europe in search of possibilities away from the shadow of her father, Henry Fonda, and became involved with French New Wave Cinema, working with and eventually marrying director Roger Vadim. They worked together on a number of movies, including ‘Barbarella’. Her lifelong political involvement, which informed her film selections and inspired her to include female themes in her work, was also ignited during her time in France.

With numerous Oscars, Golden Globes, and an Emmy, Fonda has crafted a famous career in activism, film, and television over the years. At the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards, she is scheduled to accept the Life Achievement Award.
Looking back on her journey, Fonda acknowledged that in her younger years, she battled body dysmorphia and self-doubt. She recounted that over the years, she had been subjected to severe criticism and even threats. She claims to be the happiest she has ever been in her 80s. She has persevered in the face of adversity and continues to motivate others through her advocacy and work.
