Jenna Ortega And Winona Ryder Recall ‘Weird’ Sandworm Scene Filming in Tim Burton’s ‘Beetlejuice’

Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder recently shared insights into their experience filming the sandstorm scene in the much-anticipated sequel ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’. In this new fantasy horror comedy, directed by Tim Burton, Ryder and Ortega portray a mother-daughter duo—Lydia Deetz and Astrid Deetz—in the follow-up to the classic 1988 film.

Ryder reflected on the challenges of filming the sequence involving the iconic giant Sandworm. She described the process as particularly demanding due to the sand and wind effects, noting, “I think it’s common knowledge [that] it’s hard to run in the sand. I used to have dreams where you’re running in the sand, so it was that.”

Ortega also discussed the practical effects used in the sandstorm scene, praising Burton’s approach. “Tim’s really great because he always shows references or images or drawings or things that he has in mind,” she explained. This method, she said, made the scene feel more authentic, with the practical effects creating the sensation of the creatures genuinely pursuing them.

The sequel to ‘Beetlejuice’ will see the Deetz family returning to their Winter River home following the death of Charles Deetz.

The plot takes a twist when Lydia’s teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers a mysterious model of the town in the attic and inadvertently opens a portal to the Afterlife, releasing the mischievous Betelgeuse.

Set for release in theatres on September 6, 2024, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ promises to blend Burton’s signature style with new, eerie elements, continuing the story of the beloved original. Fans can look forward to seeing the Deetz family’s latest adventure filled with supernatural chaos and quirky humour.
