Jennifer Lopez Calls ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ Her Most Challenging and Rewarding Role
After decades in the public eye, Jennifer Lopez is still pushing herself in her job. The 55-year-old Lopez talked about her part in ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’, the movie version of the 1993 Broadway musical, in a recent interview with Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. Described as “probably the most challenging and rewarding role I’ve ever had,” she emphasized its themes of acceptance, love, and finding beauty in adversity—all of which she feels are particularly pertinent in today’s world.
The musical is Lopez’s first significant motion picture musical, and it has a John Kander score. At 97, Kander was there throughout her recording sessions, and she spoke highly of him. “One of the best moments of my career was hearing him say, ‘I’ve never heard this song sung better,'” Lopez said.

Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser who was imprisoned in Argentina in the 1980s, developed the character Aurora, who Lopez plays in the movie. Molina uses his dreams as an escape from his struggles, seeing Aurora as an actor who plays Spider-woman. The story, according to Lopez, is gloomy but ultimately about love, surviving, and supporting one another through difficult times—messages that she believes are relevant in today’s world.
Along with Ben Affleck and other co-producers, Lopez co-stars with Diego Luna. “It’s not about the awards or the accolades,” she said, underscoring her love for the work itself. It all comes down to sharing inspirational and meaningful stories.

Lopez is promoting ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ as well as her sports drama ‘Unstoppable’, which debuted in September at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film chronicles the inspirational tale of Lopez’s character, Anthony Robles, a wrestler who was born with only one leg, and his mother. She identified with the character’s selflessness and unwavering devotion to her son. As of right now, ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ has no set release date.
