Jim Carrey Open to ‘The Mask’ Sequel Nearly 30 Years After Original Film
Almost thirty years after the release of the popular movie, Jim Carrey isn’t ruling out a comeback to ‘The Mask’.
The 62-year-old actor recently revealed that, if the proposal is good, he would be open to playing Stanley Ipkiss again, the mild-mannered bank teller who changes into the cunning, green-faced trickster. Carrey made these remarks in an interview with ComicBook.com, admitting that a new and interesting plot point would be necessary to bring him back.
Chuck Russell’s 1994 film ‘The Mask’, which featured Carrey’s extravagant humour and physical comedy, became a seminal comedy.

In the movie, Stanley finds a supernatural mask that gives him strange shape-shifting abilities. He utilizes these abilities to avoid the police and save Tina Carlyle (played by Cameron Diaz), his love interest, from a mafia.
Carrey has made past references to retiring from acting, most notably in 2022 when he suggested it while on the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ press tour. He subsequently clarified, though, that although he has made jokes about retiring or working for pay, his main goal is “power-resting”—that is, putting his career on hold until the ideal project presents itself. According to Carrey, a fantastic idea and the opportunity to collaborate with gifted individuals could entice him to return.

Carrey mentioned that in addition to ‘The Mask’, he would like to play The Grinch from ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ again. Even though he acknowledged that the initial filming procedure, which involved a lot of makeup and prosthetics, was taxing, he said that modern developments like motion capture technology will make it much easier.
As of right now, Carrey will make his film comeback in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’, which opens on 20th December. It’s unclear if a sequel to The Mask or another well-loved part will be made, but as Carrey himself stated, anything is possible in this universe.
