The new sequel to ‘Joker’, subtitled ‘Folie à Deux’, has garnered mixed reactions, described by some as a “jukebox musical from hell.” Joaquin Phoenix reprises his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck, delivering a performance filled with melancholy as he croons through a selection of classic tunes. 

Critics liken his vocal style to that of Joe Cocker or the unsettling sound of glass grinding in a disposal, which may leave audiences feeling more uncomfortable than entertained.

In a surprising twist, Lady Gaga joins the cast, bringing her eclectic musical talent to the film.

However, her vibrant energy is noticeably toned down to fit the film's darker tone. Critics suggest that this approach is akin to casting Liza Minnelli in an inappropriate role, resulting in Gaga's singing appearing tentative, as if she were holding back in choir practice. Audiences will appreciate the rare moments when she is allowed to unleash her powerful voice, though the overall vibe of ‘Folie à Deux’ leans towards grimness rather than joy.

The film’s storyline revolves around Joker's trial for the chaos he instigated in the first film. His attorney, played by Catherine Keener, believes she can persuade the jury that the Joker is merely a creation of Arthur's mental breakdown. However, the narrative raises questions about the nature of identity and madness, compelling viewers to grapple with the complex duality of Joker and Arthur.

As a stand-in juror, the audience may find it hard to separate the two personas, as they appear to be intricately linked, like two halves of a broken egg. The film also teases the potential for a romantic relationship with Harley Quinn, a character previously portrayed by Margot Robbie. This relationship hints at a twisted and dangerous connection, adding layers of complexity to the Joker's character.

Director Todd Phillips had an opportunity to explore the intricate dynamics between these two fractured souls. If successfully executed, ‘Folie à Deux’ could have evolved into a haunting exploration of love and madness, revealing the unsettling yet genuine bond that can form between two deeply flawed individuals.
