Joe Alwyn Debuts New Film ‘The Brutalist’ in Venice Over a Year After Taylor Swift Split

Joe Alwyn is showcasing his latest film at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. The 33-year-old British actor is in Venice, Italy, to promote ‘The Brutalist’, a three-hour post-war epic in which he stars alongside Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones.

Directed by Brady Corbet (‘Vox Lux’), the film follows Hungarian Jewish architect László Tót (played by Brody), who survives the Holocaust and emigrates to America to rebuild his life.  ‘The Brutalist’ had its world premiere on 31st August, and is among the 21 films vying for the festival’s prestigious Golden Lion Award.

This marks Alwyn’s first film since ‘Kinds of Kindness’ earlier this year, where he reunited with Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos after their collaboration on 2018’s Oscar-winning ‘The Favourite’. At the Venice premiere, Alwyn donned a black Gucci suit, leather boots, and Gucci black-frame sunglasses.

Alwyn’s appearance at the festival comes a little over two months after he publicly addressed his breakup with Taylor Swift in an interview with The Sunday Times Style. The couple, who had dated for six years, split in April 2023. Reflecting on the breakup, Alwyn remarked on the unusual experience of having a private matter thrust into the public eye, noting how it was “dissected, speculated on, pulled out of shape beyond recognition.”

He shared that he and Swift mutually agreed to keep the details of their relationship private, a stance he continues to uphold.

Regarding his current romantic life, Alwyn chose not to reveal whether he’s seeing someone new, citing the intense scrutiny surrounding his past relationship as a reason to maintain his privacy. A source previously told PEOPLE that Alwyn is “dating and happy,” adding that while he has moved on from Swift, he speaks of her with respect, acknowledging that their relationship “just didn’t work out.” The source also mentioned that while Alwyn loves acting, he’s uncomfortable with the attention that comes with fame.

‘The Brutalist’ has yet to receive a release date.
